The Movie Star News Collection, believed to be the largest and most comprehensive collection of Hollywood photography, will be sold in a series of auctions on April 6 & 7, 2013 at The Arader Galleries in New York City. This is the first time in 75 years that this archive has been open to the public. The Collection contains approximately three million photographs, in addition to hundreds of thousands of negatives, chronicling the history of Hollywood through its most famous stars and films.
Now featuring over 5,000 different actors and actresses and more than 11,500 movie titles, the Collection began in 1939 when photographer Irving Klaw struck a deal with the movie studios, then operating in New York City, to collect movie photography that was in great demand by Hollywood fans. Klaw eventually began to create an archive of Hollywood studio original negatives from which prints were made for the media and adoring fans. Since 1980, the Collection has been housed at West 18th Street and has become a treasured New York City site.
In addition to amassing the Movie Star News Collection, Klaw is also credited for creating the world of pin-up photography. He discovered and extensively photographed Bettie Page, who came to be known as the “Queen of Pin-Ups.” The Bettie Page Collection, including over 5,000 negatives, photographs, clothing and other props, will also be auctioned.
The Collection has been divided into different categories, such as by film genre and actor, for the purposes of the auctions. Fans from around the world will have the chance to own photography of legends including Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Judy Garland, Audrey Hepburn and Charlie Chaplin, as well as from classic films such as “King Kong,” “Citizen Kane,” “Gone With the Wind,” “Frankenstein” and “The Wizard of Oz.” The Marilyn Monroe file alone contains over 600 photographs, many of which are one-of-a-kind images.
Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Rudolph Valentino, Judy Garland, Steve McQueen, Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Paul Newman and Charlie Chaplin represent just a tiny sampling of the featured figures who played in such movie classics as King Kong, Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, Frankenstein, The Godfather and The Wizard of Oz. To give a sense of the quantity of material that will be sold, the Marilyn Monroe file contains more than 600 photographs of Marilyn, many of which may be the only known examples of such images. And then, of course, are the negatives from which future prints can be created.
The auctions will be held on April 6 & 7 at The Arader Galleries located at 1016 Madison Avenue, New York City. For additional information, interested collectors and fans are urged to contact Joanne Grant at 914-882-7356.
