{"id":3764,"date":"2008-07-03T23:22:25","date_gmt":"2008-07-04T06:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/?p=3764"},"modified":"2009-03-08T14:29:17","modified_gmt":"2009-03-08T22:29:17","slug":"superman-costumes-in-the-marketplace-bermans-nathans-wardrobe-tag-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/03\/superman-costumes-in-the-marketplace-bermans-nathans-wardrobe-tag-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Superman Costumes in the Marketplace: Bermans &#038; Nathans Wardrobe Tag Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/?p=3764\" target=\"_self\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3809\" title=\"bermans-nathans-wardrobe-tag-comparison-marked-x380\" src=\"http:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/dylsoagh\/2008\/07\/bermans-nathans-wardrobe-tag-comparison-marked-x380.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/dylsoagh\/2008\/07\/bermans-nathans-wardrobe-tag-comparison-marked-x380.jpg 380w, https:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/dylsoagh\/2008\/07\/bermans-nathans-wardrobe-tag-comparison-marked-x380-300x81.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bermans &amp; Nathans of England (acquired by Angels Costumiers in 1992) made the costumes worn by Christopher Reeve in the <em>Superman<\/em> films of the 1970s and 1980s.\u00a0 As such, one of the components of provenance and authenticity are the wardrobe or asset tags affixed to costumes at the time of production.\u00a0 Of the confirmed authentic costumes I am aware of, these pieces have wardrobe tags.\u00a0 However, some costumes which have been trading in the marketplace exhibit tags that are not consistent with photos of authentic tags I have assembled for my own reference.<\/p>\n<p>This article will provide an archiving of photos of tags already &#8220;at large&#8221; in the marketplace via public sales on eBay and via auction houses in order to compare and contrast these labels and share information with collectors.\u00a0 I do have a growing database of &#8220;B&amp;N&#8221; tags from <em>Superman<\/em> and a variety of other films, but am only providing photos here of examples that have already been published on the web.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NOTE:\u00a0 Correct B&amp;N wardrobe tags on a costume do not exclusively guarantee a costume is authentic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I understand that some authentic, unused tags have circulated in the marketplace.\u00a0 More, it would not be impossible to bleach authentic tags used in one production in order to type information from another production to &#8220;repurpose&#8221; them.\u00a0 In other words, again, an authentic tag with correct traits does not guarantee such a piece is authentic, but is merely one component of provenance and authenticity to consider along with other variables.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Bermans &amp; Nathans was in business for many years, so I imagine that there was an evolution of tag style and usage, and of course different employees were involved in making such tags.\u00a0 However, I think it would be logical that wardrobe tags for the same film should have significant consistency.<\/p>\n<h3>Bermans &amp; Nathans: &#8220;Baseline&#8221; Superman III Wardrobe Tags<\/h3>\n<p>The only truly &#8220;confirmed authentic&#8221; examples of Bermans &amp; Nathans tags posted publicly on the Internet currently are those of the <em>Superman III<\/em> costume sold by ScreenUsed, which included a Warner Bros. <em>Superman III<\/em> costume offered on eBay in December of 2007 (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/?p=2993\" target=\"_blank\">Superman Costumes in the Marketplace Retrospective: billybats11 &#8220;Evil&#8221; Nathans: &#8220;Baseline&#8221; Superman Wardrobe Tags<\/h3>\n<p>In my research, Bermans &amp; Nathan tags used in the original <em>Superman<\/em> film (<em>Superman: The Movie<\/em>) and <em>Superman III<\/em> have many similarities but a few notable and consistent differences.<\/p>\n<p>To my knowledge, no <em>Superman<\/em> costumes have been offered for sale publicly that have Warner Bros. paperwork.\u00a0 As such, there are no photos of &#8220;confirmed authentic&#8221; B&amp;N tags published on the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>However, B&amp;N tag photos of Superman costumes authenticated by others have been shared with me privately, and those are consistent with some <em>Superman<\/em> costume tag photos published on the Internet.\u00a0 Below are examples of wardrobe tags that &#8220;appear&#8221; Typesetting<\/h3>\n<p>One key similarity with both <em>Superman<\/em> and <em>Superman III<\/em> tags as well as all Bermans &amp; Nathans tags I&#8217;ve seen photos of that are authentic is that all use &#8220;Fixed Pitch&#8221; typesetting &#8211; each character is the same width and uses the same amount of space, regardless of the size of the letter (for instance, an &#8220;I&#8221; traditionally takes up less space horizontally than an &#8220;M&#8221;, but, as typed, each character occupies the same space as printed on the tag.<\/p>\n<p>If you consider a standard (now vintage) typewriter, each letter\/character is on the face of a typebar, and each typebar is of the same size (often with multiple characters on individual typebar arms) as a result of the basic mechanics of typewriters in use at the time of these productions.\u00a0 Below is an example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/dylsoagh\/2008\/07\/vintage-typewriter-keys-typebar-x425.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3779\" title=\"vintage-typewriter-keys-typebar-x425\" src=\"http:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/dylsoagh\/2008\/07\/vintage-typewriter-keys-typebar-x425.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/dylsoagh\/2008\/07\/vintage-typewriter-keys-typebar-x425.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.originalprop.com\/blog\/dylsoagh\/2008\/07\/vintage-typewriter-keys-typebar-x425-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a result, as seen in the B&amp;N tag examples above, all characters as printed occupy the same amount of space on each tag.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Alternate&#8221; Superman B&amp;N Tags In The Marketplace<\/h3>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve been archiving <em>Superman<\/em> costume and costume parts offered for sale, I&#8217;ve found that some Bermans &amp; Nathans tags shown in photos exhibit characteristics that do not match the traits of the &#8220;Baseline&#8221; tags for both <em>Superman: The Movie<\/em> and <em>Superman III<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;Baseline&#8221; vs. &#8220;Alternate&#8221; B&amp;N Tags: Typed vs. Handwritten<\/h3>\n<p>One of the five &#8220;Alternate&#8221; it appears to be smooth and uniform in texture, while all Bermans &amp; Nathans tags I&#8217;ve seen photos of are characterized by the vertically ribbed texture, most with a reflective &#8220;sheen&#8221; (rather than &#8220;matte&#8221; appears seen of these examples above).\u00a0 The &#8220;Baseline&#8221; examples also appear thinner than the &#8220;Alternate&#8221; examples.<\/p>\n<p>My private archive of B&amp;N tags consists of around 40 examples from a wide variety of productions, going back to Alec Guiness in Cromwell (1970) when &#8220;Bermans &amp; Nathans&#8221; went by &#8220;M. Berman Ltd.&#8221;\u00a0 All tags I have photos of are consistent with the &#8220;Baseline&#8221; examples and none match these &#8220;Alternate&#8221; tags under examination in this article.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;ribbed&#8221;
