YouTube Close-Up Look – “Empire Strikes Back” Darth Vader Costume Auction with Bonhams Update: Withdrawn

This is part of my ongoing series of YouTube videos, with a follow up to my recent look at the Bonhams “TCM Presents … Wonders of the Galaxy – Science Fiction and Fantasy in Film” auction that took place today, May 14th, in Los Angeles. This latest video editorial provides an update to Lot 162 described as “A complete Darth Vader costume from The Empire Strikes Back/Star Wars Episode V”.  Shortly before the auction was scheduled to begin, the status of the costume was changed to “WITHDRAWN”.  However, the Darth Vader gloves from Star Wars were not withdrawn, though failed to reach the unstated reserve, stalled at $28,000. “The Star Wars Collection” Highlights Prop Store’s “Cinema Poster Live Auction” in London and Online on June 28th

As mentioned last month, this week Prop Store is holding their first auction focusing on posters.  The Cinema Poster Live Auction in London on June 28th.  The principals behind Prop Store are well known for their love of Star Wars, so it is not surprising that their first poster sale features some significant pieces from the franchise, and what they star is “the most extensive collection of Star Wars posters ever to be offered on the open market”.  There is also an exhibit at London Odeon BFI IMAX cinema. San Diego Comic-Con 2015: Prop Store Exhibit of TV and Movie Props, Costumes, Models, Memorabilia (#SDCC)

San-Diego-Comic-Con-2015-Exhibit-Photography-PropStore-London-Los-Angeles-FI

This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2015.  Prop Store has an excellent exhibition this year, featuring a preview of material from their second annual live auction coming to London later this year.  Heavy on action and sci-fi, it drew a constant crowd of Comic Con attendees, many of which are fans of these genre films.  As with Star Wars Celebration earlier this year, Prop Store continue to find new and exciting Star Wars material, such as the stormtrooper helmet – the first time being offered to the public. Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2015: “Star Wars Original Props and Costumes” Discussion Panel

Star-Wars-Celebration-2015-Anaheim-Original-Movie-Props-Costumes-Luke-ROTJ-Lightsaber-Prop-Store-Tom-Spina-Gus-Lopez-FI

From Luke’s yellow ladder A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back to his hero lightsaber from Return of the Jedi, the “Star Wars Original Props and Costumes” discussion panel at Star Wars Celebration 2015 in Anaheim ran the gamut of obscure background props to the best of the best.  Participants included Stephen Lane and Brandon Alinger from Prop Store, Tom Spina from Tom Spina Designs, and legendary collector Gus Lopez, creator of the Star Wars Collectors Archive.  Each panelist took us through one of their own “prop story” tales, showcasing the background of one of the prized pieces in their own collection.  Of note was that this was the first public announcement by Brandon Alinger that he owns what is essentially the hero Luke Skywalker lightsaber from Return of the Jedi, which was also used by Sir Alec Guiness in A New Hope as a fighting lightsaber (and not to be left out, it was also a practice dueling saber employed in The Empire Strikes Back).  It was an incredible display of both knowledge and images, and overall it underscored the importance of collectors in tracking down, identifying, restoring and preserving these important pop culture artifacts. Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2015: Prop Store Exhibitor Booth

Star-Wars-Celebration-2015-Anaheim-Prop-Store-London-Los-Angeles-Exhibit-Props-Costumes-Photos-FI

Prop Store’s exhibitor booth (#1140) for Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim in 2015 is both familiar and different.  While the size and scale is comparable to what I’ve seen at San Diego Comic Con over the past five years, obviously with Celebration it is going to be 100% Star Wars-related content.  With this show, they brought out some of the important pieces from the Prop Store Collection (i.e. owned by the principals of the company and not for sale), including a Darth Vader helmet, Han Solo jacket, and a Princess Leia gown.  [Read more…]

Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2015: “Star Wars Costumes: The Original Trilogy” Discussion Panel

Star-Wars-Celebration-2015-Anaheim-Star-Wars-Costumes-The-Original-Trilogy-Panel-Photos-FI

My friends at Prop Store have a very big presence with Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim in 2015…  in addition to their impressive exhibitor booth (#1140, replete with hero-class original production props, costumes, and artwork), Brandon Alinger (Chief Operating Officer) and Stephen Lane (Chief Executive Officer) are participating in several high profile discussion panels to the packed crowds at the Anaheim Convention Center.  I took time today attend the Star Wars Costumes: The Original Trilogy panel, which consisted of Lucasfilm executive editor J.W. Rinzler, Brandon Alinger, and Delia Greve, senior editor at Becker Mayer. [Read more…]

The Rebellion Surrenders to the Galactic Empire for $4.05 Billion Dollars (i.e. Disney Buys Lucasfilm and All Rights To Star Wars)

Yesterday’s announcement that George Lucas struck a deal to sell Lucasfilm Ltd (and related companies and properties, like ILM and Skywalker Sound, and the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises) came as a surprise to many.  Along with the announcement were details about a third Star Wars trilogy with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy as Executive Producer – Episodes 7 (already scheduled for a 2015 release), 8, and 9…  in the event the news in general didn’t warrant enough of a reaction on its own.  For me, the most surprising aspect of the deal is that circa the 70s, George Lucas was known as being quite anti-establishment… a rebel and innovator, working outside of the system, and, well, Disney (which owns ABC, ESPN, Pixar, Touchstone, Marvel Entertainment, theme parks, resorts, cruise lines, television stations, etc.) is about as establishment and corporate-oriented as they come.  Disney bought Marvel in 2009 (for $0.05 billion less), and hasn’t ruined it or anything, but Marvel is not Star Wars, and what little I’ve already seen worries me.  24 hours into this new Disney/Star Wars era, and a video is already released with Stormtroopers wearing Mickey Mouse ears riding a merry-go-round with Darth Vader.  Really?
