I truly found “reality” series Pawn Stars enjoyable when it first came on the air on History back in 2009, but it has become more and more character oriented over the years. But I always watch an episode if someone tells me that something is brought onto the show to sell that I might find interesting to watch. This past week was one of those times, with the episode “Beam Me Up” which features a woman bringing in a collection of Star Trek memorabilia associated with the television shows and movies featuring The Original Series cast. As reported on earlier in the week, Profiles in History CEO Joe Maddalena was featured on this morning’s broadcast of The Today Show – “auctioning off iconic items from famous movies” – in promotion of next month’s sale event. Of particular interest to the show was the Marilyn Monroe pink dress worn in the “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” scene in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and the Wicked Witch hat from Wizard of Oz. Yesterday I spent most of the day at the Profiles in History offices in Calabasas Hills, California to preview their “Hollywood Auction 40” event scheduled for June 10-12. In addition to extensive interviews with Joe Maddalena, President and CEO of the firm, I also took many photographs of the props, costumes, and other material being prepared for the auction. This is a follow-up to an article posted a few days ago, (see “Movies Galore” TOS Star Trek Hand Phaser – February, March, April eBay Listings), discussing a Star Trek: The Original Series “hand phaser”, marketed as original and from the 1966-69 classic television series with a Certificate of Authenticity from “Movies Galore”, which was offered for sale on eBay and sold, offered for sale on eBay again and sold, and was then offered for sale on eBay for a third time over the span of just three months.
Per an article published today by Alec Peters on his Star Trek Prop, Costume, and Auction Blog (see Phaser Update – Resolution all around!), the current eBay seller, “notdads2004”, ended his auction early and returned the prop for a refund from the previous seller, “truck8”. Buyer “truck8” then returned the prop for a refund from the original eBay seller, “grandenagus”. [Read more…]
