San Diego Comic Con 2011: Profiles in History Showcase ‘Back to the Future III’ DeLorean Restored by Brian & Desi DosSantos (ScreenUsed)

Profiles in History, which has a track record of bringing impressive (usually themed) exhibits to Comic Con (Stan Winston Studios, LOST, etc.), this year has a Back to the Future display, which is centered around an original DeLorean from the third film in the franchise, which will be offered for sale in one of their future auctions. The auction house is taking $20 donations for photo opportunities with the famous movie car, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting Team Fox, Michael J. Fox’s Foundation supporting Parkinson’s research. [Read more…]

San Diego Comic Con 2011: Preview Night, Photos of Original TV & Movie Props and Costumes on Exhibit

Wednesday night was the special “preview night” for Comic Con 2011 in San Diego. To kick off annual coverage of original television and movie prop and costume related material from the biggest pop culture event of the year, as is tradition, the Original Prop Blog is publishing photos from the main exhibit hall of Comic Con of some of the related items on exhibit and display. This year includes pieces from Dark Knight, Watchmen, Superman Returns, Inception, The Hangover Part II, 300, The Three Musketeers, and Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance, and Men in Black 3.  In particular, Legendary Pictures has an extensive display of original movie props and costumes. TMZ Reports on Cease & Desist Sent to Profiles in History Over “Rocky” Boxing Gloves; Sylvester Stallone Claims They Are Not Authentic

TMZ today reports that auction house Profiles in History have been sent a letter by Lavely & Singer, litigation counsel for Sylvester Stallone, regarding Lot 1069 from their “Hollywood Auction 44” catalog, published yesterday.  Per the report and copy of the letter published by TMZ, Stallone’s attorney claims that the “pair of screen-used Sylvester Stallone ‘Rocky Balboa’ boxing gloves” attributed to Rocky (1976) are not authentic.  TMZ also reports that a Profiles in History “rep tells us the company is VERY confident the gloves are legit“. Alteration of Historic Lincoln Document in National Archives Highlights Issues Related to Manipulation of Genuine Assets and Authentication

Earlier this year, a story broke about the discovery that a genuine document produced by Abraham Lincoln had been altered in order to make it more historically significant.  While the identification and preservation of historic documents is outside the scope of the same in the entertainment/popular culture memorabilia field, the story is instructive none the less, and highlights the ease with which genuine material can be altered to make it more important and valuable. San Diego Comic Con International 2011 Membership Passes/Tickets/Badges Redux – To Go On Sale Tomorrow

Jalopnik Challenges Authenticity of “JFK Ambulance”; Barrett-Jackson Sells Vehicle for $132,000 at Auction

While not about original props and costumes from movies or television, this story is of interest in that it involves a public auction and public challenges over the authenticity of a high value item offered for sale – an ambulance said to have carried the body of President John F. Kennedy following his assassination in 1963 (Barrett-Jackson Lot: 1277 – 1963 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE AMBULANCE).  [Read more…]

San Diego Comic Con International 2011 Membership Passes/Tickets Go On Sale November 1st

Membership passes for San Diego Comic Con International 2011 will go on sale at 9:00 am Pacific Time on November first.  Next year’s show will be held July 21-24.  For the past several years, tickets have sold out online far in advance of the show.  There is no on-site registration, and the passes including the special Wednesday “Preview Night” were sold out at this past year’s event, so none will be made available online this year.
