Julien’s Auctions has published the online catalog for their upcoming sale – “Icons and Idols” – which will be held at their Beverly Hills gallery on November 8th, 9th, and 10th. The first day of the three days of auction will feature Property from the Estate of William Travilla, which includes over 400 items encompassing original costumes, costume sketches, awards, and more. This collection will be on exhibit at Newbridge Silverware’s Museum of Style Icons in Ireland prior to the sale. The following two days will feature a variety of Hollywood memorabilia with 800 lots including Clayton Moore’s Lone Ranger mask, a 1942 Academy Award, and a number of items from Marilyn Monroe, Stan Laurel, Mary Pickford, Cyd Charisse, Walter Matthau, and more.
Julien’s Auctions today announced “The Trilogy Collection: Props & Costumes from Middle Earth”. The auction event is scheduled for December 5th at their showroom in Beverly Hills. The offering boasts the largest offering of original material (props, costumes, and other original assets) from a single collector from the trilogy of movies directed by Peter Jackson (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King) and based on the J.R.R. Tolkien best-selling fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings. Material from the films include Frodo’s “Sting” sword, Gimli’s axe, Aragorn’s sword, Gandalf’s staff, and more. [Read more…]

Lots for Premiere Props’ September auction have been listed online with online bidding partners iCollector, LiveAuctioneers, and ArtFact as part of their “Hollywood Extravaganza XI”. The two-day auction is scheduled for September 28-29, currently featuring over 800 lots. As with past auctions, the sale includes a mix of original props, costumes, and other film and television artifacts, as well as general Hollywood Memorabilia. [Read more…]

One of the more interesting lots in the RM Auctions sale in London this week – the highly customized Lotus Esprit that was converted into a submarine in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) – hammered for £550,000, which translates to about $968,000 with fees. While it did not meet pre-sale estimate expectations that were set at £650,000-£950,000, it is a significant sale none the less, and certainly improves upon the price paid by the buyer who purchased the contents of a New York storage container for a mere $100 about 24 years ago. As is their usual procedure, Premiere Props has put up a portion of the lots for their upcoming sale (Hollywood Extravaganza XI on September 28-29) with online bidding partner iCollector, though with these lots each includes boilerplate information about authentication that has not been part of past auctions. Back in May, I made a public and literal plea for Premiere Props to put a real and substantive effort into authentication of their consignor-based auction material, and whether or not it is merely coincidental, it appears that they are doing just that starting with this upcoming auction, with “a panel of industry experts not affiliated with Premiere Props” called MovieProps DNA (MPDNA). While the “soft launch” of these changes raises many questions (which I will outline below), it is certain a significant step in the right direction. [Read more…]
