Julien’s Auctions has published the online catalog for their upcoming sale – “Icons and Idols” – which will be held at their Beverly Hills gallery on November 8th, 9th, and 10th. The first day of the three days of auction will feature Property from the Estate of William Travilla, which includes over 400 items encompassing original costumes, costume sketches, awards, and more. This collection will be on exhibit at Newbridge Silverware’s Museum of Style Icons in Ireland prior to the sale. The following two days will feature a variety of Hollywood memorabilia with 800 lots including Clayton Moore’s Lone Ranger mask, a 1942 Academy Award, and a number of items from Marilyn Monroe, Stan Laurel, Mary Pickford, Cyd Charisse, Walter Matthau, and more.

As per usual, Prop Store and staff from the London and Los Angeles offices have brought an assortment of impressive original TV and movie props and costumes to Comic Con International: San Diego this year, with highlights including the original motion tracker from Aliens and the flame thrower from Alien, as well as a bullwhip used by Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. This is actually the lightest year in some time for original props and costumes on display at Comic Con International: San Diego, apart from the usual showing by Profiles in History and Prop Store. Nothing from Disney this year (who usually exhibit every other year) and much of what is on display is material from films not yet released. [Read more…]
The Original Prop Blog will be providing its usual covering of things related to the original movie and television prop and costume art market for the sixth year in a row at the upcoming Comic Con International: San Diego for 2013 in a few short weeks. As per usual, Prop Store will be there with a mix of for sale and “Prop Store Collection” material on exhibit, and this year they have produced a video and published a press release as a preview of what to expect. This week Roger J. Christian, who won an Academy Award for his work as Set Decorator on Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), published a reader comment to one of my older articles concerning the prop lightsabers used in that first Original Trilogy film, and two featured at the NRA Museum acquired from Ellis Props. I feel Mr. Christian’s information as principal production member directly involved in the props was definitely important to highlight here and memorialize as part of the ongoing dialogue concerning memorabilia in the marketplace that is characterized by some as “authentic” and “original” to the production, when that might not be the case. For reasons unknown to me, I continue to receive communications from recent buyers of memorabilia attributed to film and television productions, who believe I have something to do with various eBay sellers and/or Ellis Props (see article from one month ago today, “NOTICE: Original Prop Blog Does Not/Will Not Supply Props to Dealers “jnsmcmahan”, “jsnent”, John Tarter, Billie Null, Mark Sullivan, L.A. Prop & Wardrobe, Hollywood Prop Supply, Studio West Prop, Ellis Props, et al“). In any event, with one of these more recent contacts, I asked the buyer of one of these pieces to send me a photo of the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) supplied with the item purchased (in this case the COA provided was one that originally appears to be from Ellis Props). A long time trusted collector in the field was kind enough to forward to me some images of confirmed legitimate examples of Ellis Props COAs obtained during the sales/liquidation circa ’99/’00, and that COA is very different from the one just obtained by a buyer from a piece purchased on eBay.
