Per Courthouse News Service, Richard Abrahamson (a former owner of Toon Art) has filed a lawsuit against John LeBold and Americana Dance Theatre, Inc. over the sale of a number of wardrobe pieces attributed to use in various Hollywood films. The complaint was filed in the Hamilton County Courthouse in Cincinnati, Ohio last week, and “Abrahamson seeks $90,000 for breach of contract and fraud, and punitive damages“, per the CNS report. One of the pieces purchased by Abrahamson (via Toon Art) from LeBold in 1999 was Elizabeth Taylor’s costume from Cleopatra (1963), which Abrahamson recently attempted to resell through Profiles in History. The report claims, “[u]pon publication of the [auction] catalogue [sic], the owner of the authentic ‘Cleopatra’ dress contacted Profiles in History to notify them of the fraudulent representation in their catalog“. As a brief update to the Christie’s sale and EON Productions charity event, “50 Years of James Bond – The Auction“, though the catalog is not officially online, 50 lots are currently viewable on www.christies.com via their search feature. The online-only auction running September 28-October 5 will benefit a variety of charities, including UNICEF, ORBIS., Women for Women, The Science Museum, ChildLine, Barnardo’s, Tickets for Troops, and Parkinson’s UK. The online catalog for the Premiere Props “Hollywood Auction Extravaganza VII”, scheduled for September 15-16, is now listed via online bidding partners iCollector and LiveAuctioneers. The auction includes over 1,000 lots from various film and television productions. Also included are a substantial number of replica props and general memorabilia. [Read more…]
I had heard about this auction from multiple sources going back to earlier this year, so I’m glad to see that it’s finally been officially announced. The Christie’s sale, in conjunction with EON Productions, has been titled “50 Years of James Bond – The Auction”. Given that choice Bond pieces have realized extraordinarily high prices in recent years, particularly those sales held in England, I expect that this will be a fascinating auction to watch.
