Prop Store’s Latest “Rick Baker: Monster Maker” Online Auction Live

Prop Store will be holding new auctions as part of their “Rick Baker: Monster Maker” online-only event starting this week, and running at least four weeks, with new material added weekly.  The no reserve auction boasts original props and costumes directly from the legendary effects artist.  Prop Store held a live Rick Baker auction event at Universal City back in May. ‘Star Wars’ Make-Up Artist and Legend Stuart Freeborn Dies at 98

Legendary make-up artist Stuart Freeborn, best known for his work bringing iconic Star Wars characters like Yoda and Chewbacca to life, has passed away at age 98.  Having worked in feature films for over 60 years, he also worked with Stanley Kubrick on Dr. Strangelove, as the creator behind the many roles played on screen by Peter Sellers, as well as the ape-like humans in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Swann Galleries Presents “Property from the Estate of Filmmaker Gary Winick” Auction in NYC on April 4th

Swann Galleries will be holding a two-part auction of the “Property from the Estate of Fillmaker Gary Winick” and “19th and 20th Century Photographs and Photobooks” on April 4th in New York.  Gary Winick, a director and producer, tragically died after a struggle with brain cancer and complications that followed.  He passed at the age of 49 about a year ago. Visionary Conceptual Artist and Designer Ralph McQuarrie Passes Away at Age 82

Legendary conceptual designer and artist Ralph McQuarrie, best known for his work on the original Star Wars trilogy, passed away today at age 82.  His vision was fundamental in the creation of many characters and worlds in popular films, and is greatly respected in the industry and by fans.  Having passed today, a number of sentiments are being expressed on the Internet as news spreads.  As a huge fan of Star Wars myself, I truly appreciate his significant contributions to the works and his contributions to other important films, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. Amid the topics of copyright ownership, enforcement of a U.S. judgment in the UK, determination of “works of art”, and other issues as featured in mainstream media reports about the ongoing legal battle between Lucasfilm LTD (LFL) and Andrew Ainsworth and his Shepperton Design Studios (SDS), what has not garnered as much focus is the debate over which artist originally sculpted the iconic stormtrooper helmet design that was adopted for use in Star Wars: A New Hope and the films that followed.  [Read more…]
