The Gilt Group has again opened a unique sale of original props for charity, this time offering material from Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, which opens in theaters in the United States tomorrow.  Per the website retailer, “Lee is donating the proceeds from the props to Orangutan Foundation International (orangutan.org), after having an inspiring experience when he visited the facility while doing research for the movie”.  Of the pieces offered is the lifeboat which represents an important part of the film. Pawn Stars: Harry Houdini Straight Jacket Matched to Vintage Photo from January 1, 1915 – For Sale On eBay

Last week’s episode of Pawn Stars featured a gentleman who brought in a vintage straight jacket that he believed to have been owned by magician Harry Houdini.  In the episode, Rick calls in Murray SawChuck to help authenticate the piece, which he ultimately believes he does irrefutably via matching details (stitching, buttons, placement and style thereof) to a very high resolution vintage photo from January 1, 1915.  If correct, it marks the pieces as extraordinarily rare and historically important, yet the owner of the piece and Rick cannot come to terms, with the owner at $30,000 and Rick at $25,000.  It would seem to be much more valuable than that, by my estimation, and is currently listed for sale on eBay for $149,000. Pawn Stars: An Entertaining Television Series for Collectors and Original Movie Prop Hobbyists

One of my favorite programs on television is Pawn Stars, which airs on The History Channel.  Pawn Stars is a reality series about the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas run by “The Old Man”, his son Rick, and his grandson “Big Hoss”.   The series is akin to Antiques Roadshow in that customers bring in antiques, collectibles, and other items to sell, which includes authentication and appraisal by experts. More On Original Props from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

The topic of original props made for the film, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea was broached in two recent articles, focusing on a Nautilus model that was part of the final auction event held by Red Baron’s Antiques (see Red Baron Antiques Final “End of an Era” Auction September 27-28, 2008 and Follow-up: 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea & Red Baron ‘Nautilus Model’ Auction). Follow-up: 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea & Red Baron ‘Nautilus Model’ Auction

Since publishing the article a few days ago about the final auction event to be held by Red Baron’s Antiques (see Red Baron Antiques Final “End of an Era” Auction September 27-28, 2008), prop collectors very familiar with the film 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea have provided some photos and observations related to the auction for the Nautilus model described as an “80″ Studio prop believed to be one of the submarines used in the 1954 movie“.
