Vintage Poster Scandal Update: 1931 Dracula Poster Lawsuits & Default Judgments – Profiles in History vs. Thomas Rega / Thomas Rega vs. Studio Conservation

1931-Dracula-Poster-Scandal-Update-Poster-Mountain-Profiles-in-History-Thomas-Rega-Diane-Jeffrey-Lawsuits-x380

One of the most significant scandals to hit Hollywood memorabilia collecting in the past decade was a series of discoveries in the poster community relating to purported fraudulent movie posters and one sheets.  A new update was published yesterday on the MoPo Mailing List at FilmFan.com by Dianne Jeffrey, President and CEO of Studio Conservation Inc.   Ms. Jeffrey was the professional who did some of the restoration work (in good faith) on the Dracula poster consigned to a Profiles in History auction in which it was featured on the cover of their “Hollywood Auction 37” sale event in 2009. Ms. Jeffrey has stated on MoPo that she received notice of a default judgment against her from Thomas Rega “in the amount of $263,312.50, plus attorney fees of $18,134.80”; she is a resident of California and the lawsuit was filed against her in New Jersey and she did not represent herself and/or her business in court.  Interestingly, Profiles in History was previously awarded a default judgment against Thomas Rega in their own lawsuit filed against him in California. eBay Auction: “Jurassic Park Cryocan SCREEN-USED PROP Original COA” for $5,000 is “NOT A REPLICA” [UPDATE: Shades of Land Shark?]

This is an update to the article published about 24 hours ago (see “eBay Auction: “Jurassic Park Cryocan SCREEN-USED PROP Original COA” for $5,000 is “NOT A REPLICA”“), in which an eBay dealer, ridaeb, offered for public sale a “Jurassic Park Cryocan SCREEN-USED PROP Original” for $5,000…  using the same photo of a prop that is clearly identified as a fan made replica/reproduction on another site, YourProps.  Well, the auction was canceled/withdrawn (as well as all evidence of it, apart from my archive in the prior article).  Then, earlier today, it was relisted at the same price, with the same description, with another photo taken from YourProps.  That was canceled/withdrawn… and it appears yet again with a third photo from the website Jurassic Park Terror – and the photo depicts… another Rylo-made replica prop. eBay Auction: “Jurassic Park Cryocan SCREEN-USED PROP Original COA” for $5,000 is “NOT A REPLICA”

A friend of mine last night pointed me to an eBay auction, that is much like many of listings in the “Entertainment Memorabilia > Movie Memorabilia > Props > Originals” category on eBay… it features claims of an original prop, and absolutely nothing is done to demonstrate it as such and validate the marketing claims.  In addition with this one – a “Jurassic Park Cryocan SCREEN-USED PROP Original”, offered for sale by ridaeb, this “original” prop offered for sale to the public for $5,000…  uses the same photo of a prop that is clearly identified as a fan made replica/reproduction on another site (and the eBay version of the photo has the watermark seen on YourProps cropped out). This is an update to the ongoing series of articles into various claims and charges of fraud in the posters, one sheets, and lobby cards art market that have rocked the collectibles industry over the past two and a half years. Judge Sentences eBay Entertainment Memorabilia Dealer to over 8 years in Federal Prison and Orders to Pay Nearly $175,000 in Restitution to Victims

As reported on last year (see “eBay Entertainment Memorabilia Dealer Pleads Guilty to Fraud Charges in U.S. District Court“), eBay entertainment memorabilia dealer David Bruce Shyrock plead guilty to fraud charges in federal after defrauding over 1,200 eBay users out of nearly $175,000 by selling memorabilia with forged autographs on the popular online auction website.  Today, the Joplin, Missouri man was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard E. Dorr to eight years and four months in federal prison without parole.  The court also ordered Shyrock to pay $174,894 in restitution to his victims.  [Read more…]

Donnie Darko “Frank” Bunny Mask on eBay is NOT the Mask Seen in 2008 Original Prop Blog James Duval Interview

A reader directed my attention to an active eBay auction listing in which the the description can lead one to believe that the Donnie Darko “Frank” bunny mask for public sale is the same “one of a kind” mask that was seen in an interview conducted by the Original Prop Blog with actor James Duval at Comic Con International in July 2008.  Based on my review of the photos included in the eBay auction listings, this is not the same mask.  The auction description states: “The mask was gifted to me by actor James Duval, who played the role of ‘Frank’.” The following sentence states: “Please see the youtube video with James talking about the mask below.” [Read more…]
