Premiere Props have listed their next auction as part of their “Hollywood Extravaganza XVIII”. The one-day auction is scheduled for June 27th, marketing 600 lots (though with two weeks to go, only 68 appear on the iCollector listing). As with past auctions, the sale includes a mix of original props, costumes, and other film and television artifacts, as well as general Hollywood Memorabilia and a lot of replicas/reproductions/toys. Heavy metal rock star and filmmaker Rob Zombie is offering fans a chance to bid on original movie props and costumes from his films, including Halloween 2 and Lords of Salem. There is a minimum bid of only $300 on each lot. In addition to authentic movie memorabilia are other opportunities, such as meet and greets during his upcoming tour and autographs. Prop Store’s exhibitor booth (#1140) for Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim in 2015 is both familiar and different. While the size and scale is comparable to what I’ve seen at San Diego Comic Con over the past five years, obviously with Celebration it is going to be 100% Star Wars-related content. With this show, they brought out some of the important pieces from the Prop Store Collection (i.e. owned by the principals of the company and not for sale), including a Darth Vader helmet, Han Solo jacket, and a Princess Leia gown. Premiere Props, known in this art market as a company that holds a lot of low end auctions with great frequency, actually sold a piece this weekend for $344,000 (including fees) to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in their Hollywood Extravaganza XVII sale. The piece was a model of the Aries 1B Trans-Lunar Space Shuttle from Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey. An interesting development for a number of reasons… 1) Premiere Props usually does not sell high end (six figure) material, 2) AMPAS has already gone public about being the buyer, and 3) who were the underbidders?
