Profiles in History ‘Hollywood Auction 40′ Video Preview: Edward Scissorhands, Stan Winston, Investing in Movie Props

May 30, 2010 By Jason DeBord

The fourth video in a series covering the “Hollywood Auction 40” event by Profiles in History in June, this segment includes discussion with CEO Joe Maddalena about the Edward Scissorhands prop, Stan Winston Studios, upcoming auctions by other companies over the Summer, and the concept of original TV and movie props and costumes as investments.

With the discussion of the Edward Scissorhands prop, authenticity, and “metal” scissorhands props, in order to set the context for Joe Maddalena’s comments in the video…

As many collectors know, I was sold a set of the same style prop attributed to Edward Scissorhands back in 2006.  These were characterized as “hero” and “worn by Johnny Depp”.  I paid $30,000 for this prop.

Upon receipt, I was immediately alarmed in pulling them out of the shipping box, as it would be impossible for Johnny Depp (or anyone else) to “wear” them as the holes in the finger slots could not accommodate human hands, and they would be far to heavy to wear and articulate, in addition to other issues with the piece.  They were eventually returned for a full refund.

Some time later, the same props were again sold (for the same amount) to a prominent and extremely successful film and television producer, director, and actor.  He eventually got in touch with me, and we discussed the pieces at length.  They were ultimately presented to the individual at Stan Winston Studios who originally made the pieces for the movie and he personally fit them on Johnny Depp during the film  He determined that they were not made for nor used in the film.  They have since been taken out of circulation within the hobby by the second person to whom they were sold.

The same video can also be viewed on YouTube: LINK

Additional video features will be published over the coming week (click here to see all video previews); 270 high resolution photos taken of those pieces on display were published in recent days. All items and detailed descriptions can be viewed via their online catalog as well as on the official www.ProfilesInHistory.com website and the www.LiveAuctioneers.com site.
