Studio Reseller Hollywood Vault (“Rainmakers”): Current & Future Status?

May 31, 2009 By Jason DeBord

One of the two studio resellers of original movie and television props and wardrobe that have historically sold very high quantities of product appears to have had very limited sales in recent months and one of its two websites (rain-makers.net) is returning a “404” error status while the other (hollywoodvault.net) is stripped down to “coming soon” presentation.  This raises questions about the current and future status of Rainmakers and their multiple Hollywood Vault eBay “Power Seller” dealer accounts.  Are they reorganizing/relaunching or is the business winding down?

When I first began collecting several years ago, both Hollywood Vault and Premiere Props were selling very large quantities of original props and wardrobe from movie and television productions on behalf of various studios via eBay.  As one of the two biggest “studio resellers”, Hollywood Vault has been a part of the ongoing discourse of this website, as they have consistently been one of the companies selling significant quantities of confirmed authentic props, since they were coming directly from the studios, which has been beneficial to collectors.

Over the past several months, the sales activity from the eight Hollywood Vault eBay accounts has been limited to a handful of sales.

A listing of the Hollywood Vault eBay accounts can be found here (though I believe the reference to “7” may be an error):  LINK

Hollywood Vault describes itself as follows:

Hollywood Vault is your one-stop shop for all the best Hollywood Movie Memorabilia – with great prop and wardrobe items direct from the sets of your favorite hit movies and television shows!

Our clients include; Sony Pictures, Revolution Studios, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Walden Media, Initial Entertainment, Stone Stanley and ABC Television. With this line-up of film and television giants we are able to offer you this unique opportunity to own a piece of Hollywood history and get closer than ever before to the films and stars you love most. All of our great memorabilia comes with a specially designed certificate of authenticity from the studio.

Our high quality auctions are informative and easy to navigate with multiple images and complete descriptions of your favorite items – so enjoy and thank you for shopping at Hollywoodvault.

Of the eight eBay accounts, stores 4, 5, 6, and 7 no longer exist, and of all eight, there is only one active listing.

In looking at the eBay feedback for these accounts, 3, 4, 5, 6, and HollywoodShowPieces have feedback no more recent than 2008, and 7 does not exist.  The primary hollywoodvault and hollywoodvault 2 accounts do show some more recent activity, though it is limited.

In reviewing Goofbay reports for the past 90 days, hollywoodvault shows only 17 sales totaling $768.33 while hollywoodvault2 shows 1 sale for $9.99.

The two related (off-eBay) websites for these businesses also raise questions as to the status of the company.

www.hollywoodvault.net has been changed to a “COMING SOON!” status:

www.rain-makers.net returns a “Forbidden” not found error status:

Browsing the “Internet Archive Wayback Machine” at archive.org returns archived versions of these two websites which show what they used to look like when the auctions were active on eBay, between 2003-2008.
