Ellis Props “Star Wars Luke Lightsaber” Update – Additional Photos

November 17, 2008 By Jason DeBord

A short update regarding the lightsaber on display at the National Firearms Museum, originally sold by Ellis Props in their liquidation sale, characterized as an original prop from the Star Wars trilogy.

  • Ellis Props “Star Wars Luke Lightsaber” Update – Comments from Jim Supica, Director of the National Firearms Museum

Since the last update, I have received additional photos.

Below are photos that Mike Mancini of The Movie Prop Forum had saved at the time of the Ellis Props liquidation sale in June of 2000, with attributions per his records.

Below is a photo that Jim Supica, Director of the National Firearms Museum had sent to me. This was characterized as an “Obi Wan Kenobi” lightsaber:

Note that the lightsaber now attributed to Obi-Wan Kenobi (directly above) includes a “Lot 369” Ellis Props auction tag and is a “3-cell” Graflex flashgun.  The Luke Skywalker lightsaber in the original auction photo (further above), with the “Lot 367” Ellis Props auction tag, is also a “3-cell” Graflex flashgun.  The Luke Skywalker lightsaber currently on display at the museum is a “2-cell” Grafelx flashgun and includes a “Lot 367” Ellis Props auction tag.

Also of note is that the microflash attributed to Darth Vader (current owner unknown) does not appear to be the “MPP” (Micro Precision Products) style identified as used in the original Star Wars trilogy (see Parts of Star Wars), which was customized in a manner similar to the Luke Skywalker lightsaber with grips and other greeblies.

If anyone has any further information or insights to share, please post a Reader Comment below or contact me directly.
