Visionary Conceptual Artist and Designer Ralph McQuarrie Passes Away at Age 82

Legendary conceptual designer and artist Ralph McQuarrie, best known for his work on the original Star Wars trilogy, passed away today at age 82.  His vision was fundamental in the creation of many characters and worlds in popular films, and is greatly respected in the industry and by fans.  Having passed today, a number of sentiments are being expressed on the Internet as news spreads.  As a huge fan of Star Wars myself, I truly appreciate his significant contributions to the works and his contributions to other important films, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. Friend of the Original Prop Blog – David Oliver of Propmasters – has provided some photos to share with readers of his recent visit to The National Motor Museum in the United Kingdom.  The museum is currently featuring a year long exhibition of the world’s largest collection of vehicles used in James Bond films, as reported last month.

Congratulations to Tom Spina Designs on ‘The Dog Strikes Back’ 2012 Volkswagen Game Day Commercial (Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina Creatures)

I just wanted to give a public congratulations to my friend Tom Spina and all his cohorts over at Tom Spina Designs for their outstanding work on the new Star Wars themed commercial produced for the Superbowl this month.  The ad, “The Dog Strikes Back: 2012 Volkswagen Game Day Commercial” features a cut to a stunning recreation of the A New Hope Mos Eisley Cantina, with creature masks, prosthetics, and some costumes made by the Tom Spina Designs team (10 aliens in total).  Incredible. Exhibition: “Bond in Motion – 50 Vehicles – 50 Years” at Beaulieu’s National Motor Museum

The National Motor Museum in the United Kingdom will be featuring a year long exhibition of the world’s largest collection of vehicles used in James Bond films, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Bond franchise, 40th anniversary of the National Motor Museum, and 60th anniversary of Beaulieu.  On display will be 50 vehicles used by Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig in their respective James Bond films. James Bond “Live and Let Die” Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Movie Prop Sells for Quarter of a Million Dollars

Offered as part of Christie’s “Important Watches” auction in Geneva this week, the auction house sold a specially customized Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner wristwatch that was used by Roger Moore as James Bond in Live and Let Die. The piece sold for an impressive CHF219,000 (or about $243,959) with buyer’s premium. Read more

“Lord of the Rings In Concert” Touring Attraction Features Original Movie Props & Costumes Display

The ‘Lord of the Rings in Concert’ tour launched last night in Glendale, Arizona with eight more dates in other cities through the rest of October.  Lord of the Rings movie prop and costume collector Troika will be traveling with the symphony and putting some of his remarkable collection on display for concert attendees.  Troika will be on hand at each concert to meet with fans and other original prop collectors.
