More Examples of ‘Western Costume’ Letters of Authentication Dated 12/29/75 for George Reeves Superman TV Series Wardrobe Pieces
June 28, 2010 by Jason DeBord · Leave a Comment
Last week, an Original Prop Blog article revisited a 2008 feature (see …Questions, Observations) which archived marketing collateral regarding a George Reeves Superman wardrobe piece with a Western Costume Company letter. The new article (see Signature Comparison…) compared the letter and signature to a similar letter attached to a Superman cape offered for public sale on eBay . I’ve since received photos of three additional Western Costume letters bearing the signature of Robert Niewoehner with the same date: December 29, 1975.
Signature Comparison: ‘Western Costume’ Letters of Authentication for George Reeves Superman TV Series Capes Dated 12/29/75
June 22, 2010 by Jason DeBord · Leave a Comment
In 2008, an article was published on the Original Prop Blog with regards to certain props and costumes consigned to a Signature House auction (see Signature House Entertainment Memorabilia Auctions – Questions, Observations). Included were questions raised about the remarkable coincidence of two letters of authentication included with two different capes (attributed to use by George Reeves in the Superman television series produced in the 1950s) from two different dealers; both letters shared the same date: December 29, 1975. A third such letter – with the same date – has now been introduced into the marketplace. This third example bears a signature that appears to differ from the example featured in the 2008 article. The Superman Cape Authentication Challenge: Consign with a Reputable Movie Prop & Costume Dealer or Auction House
January 11, 2010 by Jason DeBord · Leave a Comment
The seller of a wardrobe piece featured in one of the recent and regular “Superman Costumes in the Marketplace Archive” articles (see December 2009) made a “Reader Comment” in response to the feature about his public “for sale” offering on eBay. The owner of the “Super Hollywood” sourced and authenticated Superman cape has posted an open request for authentication. Conversely, given that he purchased the item and now seeks to sell it, I would challenge him to query some of the reputable auction houses and dealers that make a regular business of selling original movie props and costumes to see which of them would take the piece on consignment. Interestingly, these auctions and costume parts relate back to previous OPB articles. Read more
Superman Costumes in the Marketplace: Bermans & Nathans Wardrobe Tag Analysis
July 3, 2008 by Jason DeBord · 1 Comment
Bermans & Nathans of England (acquired by Angels Costumiers in 1992) made the costumes worn by Christopher Reeve in the Superman films of the 1970s and 1980s. As such, one of the components of provenance and authenticity are the wardrobe or asset tags affixed to costumes at the time of production. Of the confirmed authentic costumes I am aware of, these pieces have wardrobe tags. However, some costumes which have been trading in the marketplace exhibit tags that are not consistent with photos of authentic tags I have assembled for my own reference. Read more

Bonhams “Superman IV Flying Suit” (June 2008 Auction)

The upcoming Bonhams June 18, 2008 “Entertainment Memorabilia” auction held at Knightsbridge (see article) features a Superman costume attributed to use by Christopher Reeve in the fourth installment of the film series, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
The Bonhams site features Flash technology so that interested parties can zoom in on the supplied photo for more detail; while time consuming, it is possible to then piece together a larger, higher resolution photo using Photoshop, which I have done to take a closer look at this costume.
It is part of Sale 15801, Lot 108: LINK Read more

Superman, Superboy, and Disney’s Creative Costuming
May 17, 2008 by Jason DeBord · 2 Comments
Those readers who have followed the ongoing series of articles about Superman costume/costume components offered for sale, attributed to use by Christopher Reeve in the Superman films of the 70s and 80s, will have likely noted that many costumes circulating in the marketplace are marketed as having previously been used as reference pieces in the production of similar costumes for the Superboy (AKA Adventures of Superboy) television series, which ran in syndication from 1988-1992 (four seasons).
Of those costumes listed in the Superman Costume Matrix: Auction House/Dealer Website Public Offerings (ver 1.0, 04/04/08), I count nine (9) costumes which are noted (explicitly or implied by source) as reference costumes for the Superboy television series. This does not reflect the number of additional costumes circulating in the marketplace on eBay that have also been described as former reference costumes for the Superboy television series (see prior articles).
Many of the costumes that are characterized as original Berman’s & Nathan’s produced Superman costumes worn by Christopher Reeve, used as reference by Disney’s “Creative Costuming” as part of the provenance, have letters/LOAs/COAs from “Super Hollywood”, signed by either Ana Mungia or Armando Alvarez. Many are also characterized as “gifts” from the Salkinds (producers of the films and television series). Read more
Superman Publicity Photo in Bonhams Auction
May 15, 2008 by Jason DeBord · 1 Comment
The upcoming Bonhams auction (see “Bonhams: Entertainment Memorabilia Auction – Los Angeles, June 16, 2008“) offers a book of original prints of Christopher Reeve as Superman in the 1978 film (see Sale 16091, Lot 3146).
With Bonhams’ Flash-based photo viewer, one is able to zoom and piece together high resolution photos, and the photo provided in the auction shows a great amount of detail in the costume, in spite of its lack of color: Read more

Superman Costume Matrix: Auction House/Dealer Website Public Offerings, Version 1.0
April 4, 2008 by Jason DeBord · 1 Comment
This work product is part of the ongoing series of articles about costumes in the marketplace attributed to use by Christopher Reeve in the Superman films of the 70s and 80s (see “Questions About Superman Costumes in the Marketplace: Authenticity, Sources, Quantity“).
What I have attempted to do is catalog the costumes offered for sale to the public by auction houses and by prop dealers on their commercial websites.
I have tried to capture as much of the key details of these offerings as possible to populate a matrix in an effort to share information with collectors about what has been offered for sale and the attributes of those costumes and costume parts. This also offers an opportunity to compare and contrast some of the characteristics of these costumes. Some also appear to have been sold and resold (based on matching wardrobe tags, for instance), as noted in the document.
Obviously, I am at the mercy of the quality and accuracy of the information used to market these pieces by auction houses, dealers, and their consignors, as applicable. In some cases, the information provided is vague and imprecise, so I would ask anyone using this document to please keep all of this in mind and to perform your own due diligence and verify all information to your own standards. I have not verified any of the information presented or claimed via the marketing and advertising of these pieces beyond what was noted in the applicable auction catalog and/or website. Read more
