PropWorx, best known for its liquidation of assets from Battlestar Galactica via two live auction events and thousands of eBay auctions, has launched a new website with details about one of its new licenses, Iron Man, on behalf of Marvel Studios. In addition to photos and descriptions of some of the nicer items is a page to pre-order a limited edition auction catalog which appears to be impressive. Read more

Premiere Props Response To Better Business Bureau Rating, Consignment Checks Returned “NSF”

Yesterday’s feature reported on the Better Business Bureau having dropped their rating for Premiere Props to a score of “D”. Based on my research, it appears to have been the result of complaints filed against the studio prop reseller by one of their consignors and customers, David Brandon of HorrorDomain.com, and a dispute which involved consignment checks returned to him by the bank stamped “NSF” (Not Sufficient Funds). Premiere Props, known in the hobby as a “studio reseller” (a company that sells original film and television assets on behalf of various studios) has recently had a significant drop in their Better Business Bureau rating. Their current BBB score is a “D” (with only two possible lower grades, a “D-” and an “F”). Read more
Prop Store Restoration of Original Nostromo Prop Model from Ridely Scott’s “Alien” (Video Part 3)

The 7 foot model of the Nostromo ship featured in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic, Alien, has been the focus of a restoration project by The Prop Store of London. Suffering decades of damage from poor conditions of improper outdoor storage, the piece has required extensive cosmetic restoration as part of its ongoing preservation.

One of the big stories last year was the legal battle between Michael Jackson’s MJJ Productions and Julien’s Auctions over the disposition of Jackson-owned memorabilia consigned to the auction house. This was ultimately settled between the parties a few months before the pop star’s death. However, two other lawsuits linger, with legal action spilling into 2010. Read more

As reported two weeks ago, Grammy Award-winning rock band Coldplay offered memorabilia for auction for their “End of Decade Clearout Sale”, with auctions having ended Monday through today, New Year’s Eve. Two years after making the rounds as a lead story in the mainstream media, the Associated Press today reports that the Supreme Court of New York’s Appellate Division ruled that a Star Trek fan does not deserve $7 million dollars in damages as a result being displeased with one of the three items won at the “40 Years of Star Trek” auction held by Christie’s. As reported back in June (see “D23 Expo” at Anaheim Convention Center in September 2009 to Feature “Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives”), Disney held a fan expo this past weekend. Included among the exhibits was one from Profiles in History which promoted the upcoming final season of LOST as well as their subsequent auction of original props, costumes, and other assets from the hit television series. Following a significant amount of mainstream media coverage, 20th Century Props held an auction of its assets July 28th-August 1st, which was managed by Great American Group. Classic Car Auction Company Kruse International Rates “F” with Better Business Bureau Leading Into Labor Day Event

The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Indiana reports that classic car auction company Kruse International has been the subject of numerous complaints with the Better Business Bureau by consignors who claim that the auction house has failed to make timely payments on sold goods. Owner and CEO Dean Kruse acknowledges the problem and pledges that debts owned to consignors from past events will be paid following this Labor Day’s annual auction event. Read more
Disney To Acquire Marvel Entertainment In $4 Billion Deal; Future Impact on “Studio Reseller” Deals?

Disney announced today that it is in the process of buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion dollars in cash and stock. This acquisition will include ownership over Marvel’s thousands of characters as well as Marvel Studios, which is responsible for film franchises such as Iron Man, The Avengers, Thor, and Captain America. The 7 foot model of the Nostromo ship featured in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic, Alien, has been the focus of a restoration project by The Prop Store of London. Suffering decades of damage from poor conditions of improper outdoor storage, the piece has required extensive cosmetic restoration as part of its ongoing preservation. Read more

As reported back in May, Premiere Props is hosting their “Massive Car and Movie Prop Auction” next weekend, August 15th, in Los Angeles at LA Center Studios. Auction service provider iCollector has at least some of the catalog online, featuring over 300 vehicles, props, and costumes used in film and television and other Hollywood memorabilia. Read more

Profiles in History Announces “LOST” Auction; Sale of Original Props & Costumes from the ABC Television Series

Today Profiles in History has officially announced their upcoming auction for Disney & ABC’s “LOST”, which will include original props and costumes from the very popular television series. The show is scheduled to concluded with its season finale in May 2010. A special preview of these items will be on display at San Diego Comic Con later this week.

In April, the “Planet of the Apes” Statue of Liberty prop that has long been the focus of an ongoing investigation by the Original Prop Blog was determined to have in fact been made for and used in the 2004 Steven Spielberg film The Terminal starring Tom Hanks – not the 1968 science fiction classic Planet of the Apes. In the wake of the death of Michael Jackson last Thursday, and the coincidental (long-scheduled) “Summer Sale” of original entertainment memorabilia which took place in Las Vegas over the following two days, the sale of 21 lots of Jackson-related memorabilia with provenance identified as from “The Collection of David Gest” has prompted significant mainstream media coverage as well as a threat of lawsuit by Mr. Gest. Per reports from the Los Angeles Times, TMZ.com, and the USA Today, Michael Jackson was pronounced dead today following a cardiac arrest and coma. The “King of Pop” has been in the news in recent months as a result of his sold out come back concert tour and a dispute with Julian’s Auctions over the sale of personal memorabilia from Neverland Ranch. Star Wares eBay Auction: Spider-Man 70’s TV Costume “Worn On Screen” or “Made For Publicity Purposes”?

Questions have recently been raised among collectors about attributions made on a Spider-Man costume described as “worn on screen in the 70’s TV Series SPIDER MAN“, which is slated to end at auction on eBay tomorrow morning. Prop dealer Star Wares today added information to the marketing description which, following research, would seem to indicate that the suit was not made for and used in the series, but a promotional suit used for publicity and advertising. Julien’s Auctions Launches “Julien’s Live” Online Bidding Service

In support of their Summer Sale in Las Vegas June 26-27, Julien’s Auctions has today announced their “Julien’s Live” online bidding service. Julien’s Auctions has historically used the excellent Auction Network in support of their live auction events, so this marks a change of bringing online bidding in-house, as we have seen with other auction houses such as Heritage Auction Galleries and Christie’s. Startifacts vs. Star Wares on eBay

Based on recent events on eBay, it would appear that long-time original movie prop dealers Startifacts and Star Wares have had some business conflicts that have spilled over into the public space. Following a rash of eBay negative feedback remarks left for Star Wares, many remarks have been expunged by eBay and the startifacts account now shows a suspended “NARU” status (Not A Registered User). With my recent trip to Burbank, to compare “Super Hollywood” Superman costumes with confirmed authentic examples from the Warner Bros. archives, I had a very limited window of time with which to take photographs of the costumes and produce comparisons.
