Original Prop Community Membership Guidelines

The Original Prop Community discussion forum is different from other online forums you may be a member of, so it is very important to read these Membership Guidelines.

The purpose of this forum is to provide an open platform with which original prop hobbyists can network with one another in a commerce-free and somewhat transparent environment. This is built upon a foundation of participants using their real names and sharing with one another in the spirit of good will.

The Original Prop Community shares many of the objectives of the Original Prop Blog:

  • To explore topics, ideas, issues, and current events that are important and of relevance to the hobby and other issues in the public interest
  • To encourage debate, discussion, and exploration of those topics, ideas, issues, and events
  • To create, build, and share an archive of organized and accessible free information and resources for collectors
  • To advocate for collectors/hobbyists/consumers in a challenging marketplace
  • To share opinions related to dealers, vendors, auction houses, and other “for sale” or acquisition outlets/resources
  • To introduce, debate, shape, discuss, and evolve concepts related to provenance, authenticity, and associated standards and expectations
  • To discourage anonymity and promote open and notorious use of one’s real identity in the community
  • To bring greater awareness of the hobby to the general public
  • To help other collectors become more discerning in collecting and archiving original and historical artifacts from film and television, as caretakers of these important pieces of our popular culture

First and foremost, with respect, this is not intended to be a democracy. While I very much value input and alternate opinions and perspectives, my goal is to serve the interests of the forum. I have served as administrator of a number of hobby-related forums over the years, so this community will hopefully reflect this experience. My time is limited, so my hope is merely to set and maintain a tone of mutual respect and good intentions.

My number one objective is to make the resource available to collectors who seek out information and knowledge about the hobby, coupled with an interest in participation and contribution.

Having said that, I feel very strongly about people being open and transparent about their identity. I think it is only fair and appropriate that everyone interact on a level playing field, and that begins with abandoning the use of “handles” and “usernames”, and using one’s real first and last name, just as you would if you joined a group of people in your community (offline) to share in a common interest.

There is simply too much at stake in this hobby, in terms of money, time, resources, and reputations to interact behind masks and pseudonyms.

Vitally important is the clear understanding and agreement that each and every person is wholly and independently responsible for their own words and actions.

I have found that people are a lot more careful about what they write, what they share, and how they express it when their real name is attached to it and it is in full public view.

If you commit something to writing, you must be willing to stand behind it. If you elect to publish something that is potentially controversial or libelous, be prepared to accept responsibility for any consequences that may result. I would also recommend that you always consider whether what you are publishing is fact or opinion (being that there is a big difference) and not leave it open to interpretation as to which it is.

Having said all of that, I am fond of strong opinions and diverse ideas – I just think it’s important that people always consider the way in which they express these things and all possible consequences.
