waynelhc is the eBay seller for this auction (eBay Item #130213963793):

“Christopher Reeve Cape from Superman”

High Resolution Archive: waynelhc eBay Listing – “Christopher Reeve Cape from Superman

Description:

Christopher Reeve Cape from “Superman” Warner Bros., 1978.

The iconic bright red cape with the big yellow “S” patch affixed to the back that Christopher Reeve wore as he portrayed Superman in the blockbuster seventies film. A handwritten notation reading flying cape pretty good damage appears on the inside lining of this piece that has been purposely distressed with a number of holes and dirt stains and a color still showing Reeves attired in the cape is included as well.

This particular cape was used in many of the flying scenes of the movie and is much more rare than other capes worn in the movie. Not the normal cape, this cape contains Velcro slits to allow wires to pass thru the cape and attach to a harness that lifted Mr. Reeve into the air. It also uses several snaps to affix the cape to the back of Mr. Reeve and allow it to stay securely attached to him during the shoot.

With the new movie “Superman Returns” already in theaters, this piece of memorabilia will no doubt be increased in value as the years go by. With the recent resurgence of comic book popularity in the last 5 years, with such films as: X-Men, The Punisher, The Hulk, Elektra, Spiderman, and the new Batman movies, Superman Returns will no doubt re-energize the popularity of the old superman series starring Christopher Reeve. Own not only a piece of Hollywood History, but an American Icon beloved around the world from people of all ages!

Right out of the Collection of Historic Auto Attractions in Roscoe, Illinois.

This is quite shocking to see. Having now seen original fabric AND an original and AUTHENTIC Chris Reeve costume, it is VERY clear to me that NONE of these items being listed are authentic.
I sincerely hope that none of them sell.

On a side note, why do these sellers continue to disrespect Chris Reeve’s memory by referring to him as Reeves???

  2. djohns says:

Jase, have you or anyone else tried to contact ebay seller waynelhc about the cape he has on offer. I tried several times with no response. The pictures he has provided on the auction are exactly the same as the cape sold by Butterfield & Butterfields that i indicated to you with regard to your Superman costume matrix version 1.0. I believe the cape is authentic but would like current pictures to confirm this instead of relying on these recycled pictures. If you or anyone else are able to successfully contact him please let me know.

  3. jdebord says:

    Hello,

I did contact “waynelhc” on 04/11/08 via eBay’s “Ask Seller A Question” and asked if the photo of the cape was from an auction house catalog.

I received a reply 04/14/08, and he confirmed it was from Butterfield and Butterfield, November 16, 1999 and offered to e-mail me scans.

    This was my reply yesterday:

Thanks for the response. If you could e-mail me scans of the catalog pages for the costumes, I would appreciate it. I have put together a matrix of all Christopher Reeve costumes offered via auction houses, and I do not have the event you reference below. Was your full costume ever offered by an auction house?

I haven’t received a response or additional photos.

Do you have scans of that particular lot from the catalog you could e-mail me? Also, I need to track down scans of the Superman costume from the Angels auction last year…

    Thanks,

    Jason De Bord

  4. djohns says:

Hey Jase, I’ve searched high and low for the catalog but to no avail. I saw an ebay auction for the same cape about 3 years ago and I’m pretty sure the seller was in the UK. That auction had stated in the description that its sale history was from B & B and contained EXACTLY the same pictures as in the current ebay auction. So I would be interested in comparing current pictures of the cape with the recycled pictures.

As for the Angels costume, I assume you are referring to the costume sold by Bonhams last year? If so, the costume is archived in their past sale history section of the bonhams website. I don’t have a catalog from that auction, but the picture of the costume on their website is good quality.

    Thanks,

    Dan

  5. jdebord says:

    Hi Dan,

    Thanks for the information.

I just found that costume on the Bonhams archive and will add to the matrix in a future update:

I also have a stack of hard copy auction catalogs to go through over the next few weeks…
